Managed work teams are still the norm but the concept of Self-Directed Work Teams (SDWT) dates as far back as the early 1960s. A Harvard Business School study found it became more mainstream in the 1990s by fast-food chain, Taco Bell. Since then, many companies such as 3M and Federal Express have successfully implemented the concept.
